The 2023 JADPRO Live conference was held in person from November 9 through 12 in sunny Orlando, Florida. It was wonderful reconnecting with advanced practitioners (APs) from around the country to catch up on the latest advances in hematology/oncology, along with their implications for advanced practice.

Highlights from the Conference

Noteworthy presentations included a panel on managing metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer with Stephanie L. Graff, MD, FACP, of Legoretta Cancer Center at Brown University and Lifespan Cancer Institute, Jeanine R. Showalter, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, AOCNP®, of Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at HCA Midwest Health, and Christine McGinn, MSN, APRN, ACNP-BC, of Lifespan Cancer Institute, and a presentation on navigating treatment options and addressing patient needs in multiple myeloma with Rachid Baz, MD, and Elizabeth Finley-Oliver, MSN, ARNP, AGNP-BC, both of Moffitt Cancer Center.

New this year were two pre-conference events on Thursday—one focused on pain management and another on topics relevant to APs new to oncology. On Friday afternoon, we were treated to an unfiltered and honest look at patient-centered care during the keynote address by Matthew Zachary, the host of the podcast Out of Patients and Founder of the nonprofit organization Stupid Cancer.

Throughout the conference, there were opportunities to learn from satellite symposia and product theaters, along with networking events such as peer roundtables and Braindate. New this year, a poster walk during the opening reception gave attendees a sneak peek at select posters, and an oral poster presentation showcased five clinical posters and their findings.

Celebrating Advanced Practice

JADPRO Live is also a time to come together and celebrate our colleagues and their tireless contributions to advanced practice and patient care. The recipient of the sixth annual Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice was Kelly Haviland, PhD, RN, MSN, FNP-BC, TGNB-C. Dr. Haviland is the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Manager of Professional Development and maintains her clinical practice as a nurse practitioner who developed the LGBTQI+ Clinical Consult Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. The Outstanding Poster Award went to the team led by Jill Folkert, ACNP-BC, AOCNP®, CGRA, for JL1105C: Advanced Practice Provider Impact on Days to First Appointment. Honorable mentions go to JL1122C: Investing in Your Newest Investment: Creating a Quality, Efficient and Cost-effective Advanced Practice Provider Orientation by lead author Sarah Stearns, MSN, RN, CCRN, ACNPC-AG, and JL1128C: Revamping APP Recruitment: Structure, Efficiency and Diversity, by lead author Margaret Canjura, DNP, FNP-BC.

Take a look at the JADPRO Article of the Year, “Management of Adverse Events in Early Clinical Trials by Advanced Practice Providers in the Outpatient Setting: The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Experience” by Fedricker D. Barber, PhD, ANP-BC, AOCNP®, FAANP, FAAN, and colleagues in the Sep/Oct 2022 issue.

Key Information

I hope you found the sessions and format of the conference this year at JADPRO Live to be accessible and engaging. Select main sessions were livestreamed for virtual attendees, and all presentations are available on-demand from November 20 through December 31.

A well-deserved recognition of efforts in coordinating this year’s conference goes to the conference chair and APSHO Board Member, Amy Pierre, MSN, ANP-C, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Flatiron Health. Amy and the conference planners did an amazing job at designing an agenda that speaks to the needs of advanced practitioners. Some interesting facts from the conference include:

  • More than 1,500 in-person attendees
  • More than 200 virtual attendees
  • Approximately 30 CE credits/hours available
  • 98 posters presented
  • 175 booths and 85 companies
  • 115 participants in Braindates

If you were unable to connect with us in
Orlando, we hope to see you at next year’s conference to be held November 14 through 17 in historic Grapevine, Texas!

In This Issue

The last issue of this year provides insights on current topics in oncology. Authors examine capecitabine as salvage therapy for recurrent or metastatic HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer. An article looks into how a 31-gene expression profile test informs advanced practitioners on the risk of recurrence and metastasis in cutaneous melanoma. Many adverse reactions of lenvatinib can resemble cirrhosis, so timely detection and management is essential in hepatocellular carcinoma. The impact of fasting is explored in the Review department, as well as a strategy to address CMV in stem cell transplant patients. An informative case study demonstrates steps to take when a result of “variant of uncertain significance” is returned from next-generation sequencing. A Practice Matters article shows how a condensed work schedule impacted burnout and workload shifts. Finally, we would like to thank all the peer reviewers who volunteer their time and expertise toward making this journal a reliable and current resource for all oncology advanced practitioners.

I want to thank each and every one of you for choosing to be a part of and engaging in this
JADPRO and APSHO community, and best wishes for the health and happiness for you and yours in the coming year.
